Don't Rush When Asked About Your Previous Job ✋

Ep.7: Start with context, not a list of duties 🚦

After the warm-up trio of self-introduction, reason for leaving, and motivation for applying, the interviewer begins scanning your work experience in detail. This is when the interview pace accelerates ⚡️

While this should be a comfortable question to answer (after all, who knows your work better than you?), many candidates make a critical mistake: rushing into a detailed list of responsibilities without providing context.

Remember: The interviewer likely knows very little about you

First-round recruiters may have studied your resume carefully, but hiring managers in second rounds often only skim the headlines:

  • What companies you worked for

  • What roles you had

  • Your educational background

  • The recruiter's notes on "why this candidate advanced to the next round"

I once had an interviewer who started our final interview by saying, "I'm too busy to read your CV. I'll check it now, but could you first tell me who you are?" Her presence was so commanding, like he was heading to a UN General Assembly meeting! 😇

Your strategy: Paint the picture before listing duties

Instead of rattling off your responsibilities in rapid-fire mode (which happens when you're nervous), start by describing your department's structure and reporting lines.

Sample Answer

Q: "Can you tell me your responsibilities?"

A: "Sure, I would be happy to walk you through my responsibilities. In the Operations Team at LALALA Company, we had one manager, two assistant managers including myself, and about 10 Korean and Japanese-speaking staff."

Key points to remember:

  1. Start with "Sure" to give yourself a moment to gather your thoughts

  2. Mention your team name and company name first

  3. Paint a picture of the team's organizational structure

Once you've established this context, you can then list your specific responsibilities in a clear, organized way using simple English phrases.
